Asian white agate trade bead necklace with silk knot spacers. This piece is stunningly beautiful.
These beads were most likely made in India, but, over time, this style of bead has been dispersed all over the world via trade routes.
Translucent white agate beads, in particular, became a status symbol for the women of the Fulani tribe in Africa, and are prized heirlooms that show tribal rank.
I do not know where these beads came from, except the orange silk knots and bead construction are a clue. This older piece und at the estate sale of a wealthy lady who lived in Washington, DC, and she traveled a lot.
Large beads measure about an inch in length, but the sizes do vary. Necklace is 48" overall.
These beads have a magical, translucent glow that is accented by the stripes present in the stone. The semi-triangle shape of the large beads really shows the beauty of the stone.
